Digital Tachographs

What does it mean for you?

On 1st May 2006, digital tachograph legislation came into force applying to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross weight fitted with a digital tachograph.

For all new vehicles registered from 1st May 2006 it will be mandatory for them to be fitted with a digital tachograph. These digital tachographs must be used to record drivers' hours when the vehicle is operating under EU Hours' Rules. This will have a major impact on the industry as analogue tachographs are being phased out over the next few years.

Here are some tips to get you started:
  • Apply for smart cards for any driver that may need to drive a vehicle fitted with a digital tachograph: find out more on the DVLA website
  • Data stored on a digital tachograph is downloaded using special equipment: find out more on the FTA website
  • Your drivers and admin staff will need instruction about how to operate a digital tachograph or handle data analysis

We are on hand to give you any extra support should you need help meeting your O’Licence obligations.
