Ryder's excellent record on managing risk Recognised in ROSPA's MORR Awards

Ryder plc were highly commended runners up in 2007’s RoSPA MORR Trophy in recognition of its focus and expertise in managing the occupation road risk within its business.
Ryder plc submission focussed on its comprehensive driver training programme introduced into its UK business in 2006 which covers all members of staff who drive during the course of their work.

Around 900 people are annually assessed on their driving skills through a Driver Development Programme, which assesses an individual’s driving ability and the degree of risk they represent. After analysis, every ‘high risk’ driver is required to attend a one day tailor-made defensive driving course.

In addition, a group of 20 lead drivers have been trained as Driver Assessors and they assess driving skills and behaviour on a continual basis and are responsible for ensuring that high driving standards are the norm at Ryder.

In addition, Ryder has implemented a comprehensive programme of health assessment and maintenance to its entire workforce, which goes beyond its statutory obligations. The programme seeks to promote health and safety practices, identify individuals with potential health issues and provide support for those needing treatment.

Approximately 1000 employees will be given health screening, which will cover blood pressure, eyesight, hearing and tests for diabetes and heart disease.

“The safety and well-being of our staff is very important to us at Ryder,” said Simon Head, Health, Safety, Environmental & Security Manager – Europe “so it is heartening to see these new initiatives received such an accolade from RoSPA. We want to ensure that our drivers have the best training and that we have the best monitoring and evaluation system to ensure that everyone is safety conscious and driving with safety in mind. By supporting this with our occupational health and management systems, we ensure that safety is at the heart of our culture.”

Ryder was also awarded a Gold Medal for its Applied Materials contract and a Silver Medal for its HP contract.
